Nissan Motor Co. Ltd. said June 7 that it is aiming for a 40% reduction in carbon emissions from its new vehicles by fiscal 2022, using a base year of 2000.
The Japanese carmaker plans to achieve this goal by producing more electric vehicles and enhancing energy management.
The company also was reported to be planning on ending its diesel engine development as it seeks to allot more resources to electric cars.
Nissan expects to reach annual sales of 1 million electric vehicles or cars with electrified powertrains by the end of fiscal year 2022.
The company added that it aims to cut back carbon emissions from production and corporate activities by 30% by 2022, compared with its emission levels in 2005.
The plans are outlined in the automaker's 2022 sustainability plan, which includes plans to reduce the use of new materials by 70% and to reduce volatile organic compounds in vehicle production processes.
Nissan also seeks to reduce water intake per unit in global production by 21% by 2022, compared with 2010.
