At least 9 killed as blast rips through St. Petersburg subway train

At least 9 people were killed and 20 injured when an explosion ripped through a subway carriage in the Russian city of St. Petersburg on April 3, with news agency Interfax citing a source saying the blast was caused by a bomb packed with shrapnel.

President Vladimir Putin said he was consulting with security services and that the explosion might be an act of terrorism, Reuters reported.

Russia has for many years been a target for Islamist fighters from the region of Chechnya and the country has also provided combat planes and special forces to help Syrian President Bashar al-Assad drive out Islamic State fighters.
