Canadian convenience store operator Alimentation Couche-Tard Inc. removed a sweetened alcoholic beverage from its shelves after the death of a teen in Quebec was reportedly linked to the drink.
The company said in a March 2 statement that selling the drink, called FCKD UP, was legal but the decision was made to pull it from stores because "acting responsibly is a daily practice at Couche-Tard."
In addition, The Canadian Press reported March 5 that privately held Canadian company Geloso Group said it would immediately stop producing the drink.
These developments come shortly after a 14-year-old girl was found dead behind her high school in Laval, Quebec. The exact cause of death is not yet known, but The Canadian Press cited a report by Montreal's French-language newspaper La Presse that said the Geloso-produced alcoholic beverage may have been a factor. However, the company's announcement about ceasing production of FCKD UP reportedly did not refer to the death.
