House Democrats subpoena DOE secretary in Trump impeachment inquiry

Democrats in the House of Representatives subpoenaed U.S. Department of Energy Secretary Rick Perry as part of a congressional impeachment inquiry regarding President Donald Trump.

In an Oct. 10 letter, Committee on Foreign Affairs chair Eliot Engel, D-N.Y.; Intelligence Committee chair Adam Schiff, D-Calif.; and Committee on Oversight and Reform chair Elijah Cummings, D-Md., ordered Perry to produce a variety of Ukraine-related documents by Oct. 18, citing public reports that he participated in White House efforts to pressure Ukraine into interfering in the 2020 U.S. presidential election by denying military aid.

Trump reportedly told House Republicans on Oct. 4 that Perry encouraged him to make the July phone call asking Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky to "look into" allegations involving former Vice President Joe Biden and his son, according to the letter. That same day, Politico reported that Perry is expected to announce his resignation from the Trump administration by the end of November, but sources said it was not related to Perry's travels to Ukraine that have come under scrutiny in connection with the impeachment inquiry.

The letter specifically alleges that Perry urged Zelensky to replace national energy company Naftogaz's whole supervisory board and presented a list of potential replacements.

"These reports have ... raised significant questions about your efforts to press Ukrainian officials to change the management structure at a Ukrainian state-owned energy company to benefit individuals involved with Rudy Giuliani's push to get Ukrainian officials to interfere in our 2020 election," the letter said.
