Uber facing suit from Illinois, senators' questions over data breach

Illinois and the city of Chicago sued Uber Technologies Inc. over claims of consumer fraud, deceptive business practices, and violations of city code over its failure to disclose a data breach, The Wall Street Journal reported Nov. 27.

The suit comes as several U.S. senators asked Uber CEO Dara Khosrowshahi to answer 11 questions regarding the way the ride-hailing service handled the incident.

"Our goal is to understand what steps Uber has taken to investigate what occurred, restore and maintain the integrity of its systems and identify and mitigate the potential consumer harm and identity theft-related fraud against federal programs," the senators reportedly wrote.

An Uber spokesman, meanwhile, said in a statement that the company takes this matter seriously and will answer any questions the regulators may have.

The news comes as a spokesman for the U.S. Federal Trade Commission said the agency is "closely evaluating the serious issues" related to how Uber handled a data breach in 2016.
