OpenStack Foundation on Dec. 5 said that a number of companies, including Chinese e-commerce giant JD.com Inc., support its new open source project called Kata Containers, which aims to combine the security advantages of virtual machines with the speed and manageability of container technologies.
The cloud computing platform developer added that Intel Corp. and software company HyperHQ Inc. contributed their technologies to initiate the project.
JD.com currently provides a container service powered by Hyper's technology.
Lijing Guo, the general manager of JD.com's cloud product management said, "With virtualized containers, the basis for Kata Containers technology, we are able to provide a container service for our customers to deploy applications in a simple, fast, secure and cost-effective manner."
