Chile approves higher lithium production quota for Albemarle

U.S. miner Albemarle Corp. secured approval from Chile to increase its production quota to about 145,000 tonnes of lithium carbonate equivalent per year, through 2043.

The company sought Chilean development agency Corfo's approval to increase its annual production quota from 80,000 tonnes. Albemarle said that its new yield technology would enable it to produce more of the mineral without needing to extract more brine from the Salar de Atacama operation.

The capacity expansions are targeted for commissioning after 2021, the company said March 9.
