The Queensland Court of Appeal ruled in favor of New Hope Corp. Ltd. unit New Acland Coal Pty. Ltd. in an appeal against the A$900 million New Acland coal mine expansion that had sought to scrap the project due to environmental concerns.
The ruling said the original Land Court recommendation against the project had been impacted by the possibility of bias from one of the judges on the case while also noting that it was outside the Jurisdiction of the Land Court to consider the effects of the proposed expansion on groundwater.
The company said Sept. 10 that it is waiting for the court to make its final orders before assessing next steps for the mine.
New Hope recently fired 150 of 300 workers at New Acland due to long-delayed permits for stage-three expansion of the site.
