Georgia Power restores power for essential activities at Atlanta airport

Georgia Power Co. has restored power for all essential activities, including all concourses and flight operations, at the Hartsfield-Jackson International Airport as of 11:45 p.m. ET on Dec. 17.

The Atlanta airport sustained a power outage after 1 p.m. ET on the same day, and Georgia Power said in a prior update that it expected to restore power by midnight.

Georgia Power is investigating the cause, but the company said it could have been due to a piece of switchgear in an underground electric facility failing and starting a fire. The fire impacted the substations serving the airport.

According to the Southern Co. subsidiary, power outages affecting the airport are rare because it has many redundant system and sources of power to ensure reliability. The company said it will continue to work to address any remaining impacts in nonessential areas of the airport.

The Atlanta airport is described as the world's busiest, serving an average of 275,000 passengers a day.
