Va. regulators approve construction of 192 MW of solar projects

The Virginia Department of Environmental Quality approved four new solar projects with a total capacity of 192 MW across the state.

The projects, Virginia Gov. Ralph Northam's office announced Oct. 3, are part of the state's efforts to meet an ambitious target that calls for generating all of its electricity from carbon-free resources, while significantly ramping up solar and wind development.

On Sept. 17, Northam signed an executive order with a goal that 30% of the state's electricity will be generated from renewable resources by 2030 with 100% of Virginia's electricity produced by carbon-free resources, including nuclear generation, by 2050.

The four projects include Dominion Energy Inc.'s 80-MW Grasshopper project in Mecklenburg County; Apex Clean Energy Inc.'s 80-MW Dragonfly project in Campbell County; Cypress Creek Renewables LLC's 20-MW Turner project in Henrico County; and Strata Solar LLC's 12-MW Danville project in Pittsylvania County.
