Total U.S. coal rail traffic for the week ended Oct. 5 decreased 13.6% year over year to 76,970 carloads, according to data from the Association of American Railroads.
Year-to-date coal rail traffic declined 7.0% through the week, while total rail traffic for the week decreased 7.1% year over year to 515,061 carloads and intermodal units.

BNSF Railway Co. coal shipment volumes clocked in at 37,116 carloads in the week ended Oct. 5, decreasing 6.5% from the previous week's 39,691 carloads and falling 8.2% from 40,438 carloads in the year-ago week.
Union Pacific Corp.'s coal shipment volumes this week were at 16,845 carloads, dropping 1.7% from 17,130 carloads the previous week and 23.9% down from the previous year's weekly volume of 22,144.
Eastern railroad CSX Transportation Inc.'s shipment volumes of coal stood at 15,328 carloads, jumping 9.6% from the previous week's 13,981 carloads but sliding 9.5% compared to 16,935 carloads the same week in the previous year.
Norfolk Southern Corp.'s coal shipment volumes totaled 16,207 carloads for the week, growing 5.1% from the previous week's 15,419 carloads but falling 9.6% compared to 17,920 carloads the same week a year ago.
Kansas City Southern's latest weekly coal shipment volume was 2,193 carloads, declining 39.5% from 3,625 carloads the previous week. The railroad serves 10 U.S. states and Mexico.
Data collected by S&P Global Market Intelligence from railroads indicate both cars originated on their lines during the week and cars received from a connecting railroad during the same week.
