HECO starts solicitation process for 300 MW of renewable energy projects

Hawaiian Electric Industries Inc. utilities have started soliciting bids for new, grid-scale renewable energy projects totaling 300 MW in Hawaii.

The companies are seeking 220 MW for Oahu, 60 MW for Maui and 20 MW for Hawaii Island, with an option to include energy storage in the bids, according to a Feb. 27 news release. Proposals are due April 30.

The solicitation is the first of the two-stage process to add renewable sources through 2022, so developers can take advantage of federal investment tax credits, the companies said.

The utilities, Hawaiian Electric Co. Inc., Maui Electric Co. Ltd. and Hawaii Electric Light Co. Inc., are collectively known as Hawaiian Electric Cos.
