Samsung Display mulls suspending LCD production line amid oversupply

Panel maker Samsung Display Co. Ltd. is mulling suspending a liquid crystal display production line in South Korea due to "supply glut," Reuters reported Aug. 16, citing a company statement.

The company reportedly said that in the wake of oversupply and worsening profitability, the company has been adjusting the production output and facility operation. A final decision is yet to be taken. The Samsung Electronics Co. Ltd. unit operates another LCD production line in China.

The company is instead planning to step up efforts to produce quantum dot organic light-emitting diode panels, The Korea Herald reported, citing Samsung Display CEO Lee Dong-hoon.

The South Korean LCD panels market has been impacted by a shift to organic light-emitting diode panels, a dip in the demand for smartphones and increasing competition from China, according to the Reuters report.

Samsung Display rival, LG Display Co. Ltd., has already converted one of its LCD production lines to an OLED production line. The company announced in July it will invest an additional 3 trillion won into 10.5-generation OLED production line at its P10 plant in Paju, South Korea.

As of Aug. 16, US$1 was equivalent to 1,206.26 South Korean won.
