Taiwan's Hon Hai Precision Industry Co. Ltd., known as Foxconn, launched an investigation into a Chinese plant that manufactures devices for Amazon.com Inc. following allegations by advocacy group China Labor Watch about harsh labor conditions at the factory, Reuters reported June 10.
The group's June 10 report, titled "Amazon Profits From Secretly Oppressing its Supplier's Workers," claimed that workers at the Hengyang Foxconn plant were paid low wages, did not receive proper training, worked excessively long hours and that the factory relied too heavily on temporary workers. The findings followed a nine-month investigation by the New York City-based group.
The Foxconn Technology Co. Ltd. factory produces Amazon's Kindles, Echo Dots and tablets.
In a response from Amazon, included in the report, company director Kara Hurst wrote that Amazon takes the reported violations "extremely seriously" and explained how the company monitors its suppliers' working conditions.
When approached by S&P Global Market Intelligence, Foxconn was unavailable to comment.
