Hampton Roads coal exports continue to recover with 15.2% YOY increase in March

Coal exports from the Hampton Roads port facilities in Virginia increased 15.2% year over year to 3.8 million tons in March and climbed 8% from February's total, according to data obtained April 3 from the Virginia Maritime Association.

At Norfolk Southern Corp.'s Lamberts Point facility, which primarily handles metallurgical coal, coal exports reached almost 1.8 million tons in March, up 15% from the 1.5 million tons of coal delivered in the year-ago period.

Kinder Morgan Inc.'s Pier IX facility, which mostly handles thermal coal, rose 14.1% year over year to 817,752 tons of coal, compared to 716,892 tons in March 2017.

Dominion Terminal Associates LLP, owned by coal producers Contura Energy Inc. and Arch Coal Inc., saw its coal exports surge 16.1% year over year to roughly 1.3 million tons of coal, compared to 1.1 million tons in the same period in 2017.
