JD.com launches smart delivery stations in China

E-commerce giant JD.com Inc. said Jan. 6 that it launched two smart delivery stations in the cities of Changsha and Hohhot in China.

Delivery robots can hold up to 30 parcels and autonomously deliver them within a 5-kilometer radius. The self-driving vehicles can plan routes and follow traffic lights. At full capacity, the delivery stations — divided equally between couriers and robots — can deliver up to 2,000 packages a day. Users can secure their orders from the robots with facial recognition.

In 2018, JD.com launched unmanned delivery vehicles in Tianjin City in China and introduced artificial intelligence-equipped delivery vehicles that can deliver items to customers' homes.
