Shiseido, Watson extend cosmetics retail partnership

Shiseido Co. Ltd. and A.S. Watson Retail (HK) Ltd. entered into a three-year strategic partnership to co-develop and market Japanese beauty products, according to a May 30 joint announcement.

The move builds on the two companies' existing multiyear partnership. Shiseido and Watson most recently co-created an anti-pollution skin care line designed for the Chinese market. Watson operates over 3,600 stores in mainland China.

Under the latest deal, Watson, which operates beauty retail outlets worldwide, will continue to market Shiseido's exclusive products under the Za and Senka brands, with plans to also market exclusive products of other brands in the near future.

Hong Kong-based Watson will also help extend the Japanese cosmetics retailer's presence in China and other operating markets, including Indonesia and the Philippines, according to the release.

In a statement, Shiseido President and CEO Masahiko Uotani said the deal is expected to address growing consumer demand for Japanese beauty products in Asia.
