Canadian Solar Inc began the construction of two new solar power projects in Japan, totaling 12.9 MWp of capacity, according to a Nov. 28 news release.
The 10.77-MWp Shizuoka solar project will be powered by 32,640 of Canadian Solar's high-efficiency MaxPower modules and is under contract to provide electricity to Tokyo Electric Power Co. Holdings Inc under a 20-year feed-in tariff at a rate of 32 cents per kWh.
Canadian Solar also plans to install 6,650 of its MaxPower modules at the 2.1-MWp Miyagi facility, the output of which will be delivered to Tohoku Electric Power Co. Inc. under a 20-year feed-in tariff at a rate of 32 cents per kWh, according to the company.
"With the addition of these two projects, the portfolio of Canadian Solar's under-construction or operating assets is well-diversified across 18 prefectures throughout Japan," Canadian Solar Chairman and CEO Shawn Qu said. "The Miyagi project marks our first project under-construction in a region severely impacted by the Great East Japan Earthquake."
The company expects to begin commercial operation of the projects in third quarter of 2018.
