JD.com set to debut shopping site in Thailand

JD.com Inc. is set to roll out its planned JD Central e-commerce site in Thailand, with a soft launch scheduled for mid-June followed by the official opening in August, the Bangkok Post reported May 31.

The site will be operated by Central JD Commerce, a joint venture formed in 2017 by JD and Thai conglomerate Central Group. It will feature goods from select merchants mainly comprised of brand owners and operators of small- and medium-sized businesses.

Thailand is JD's second-biggest market in Southeast Asia, following Indonesia and ahead of Vietnam, JD corporate vice president Gloria Li told members of Thai media during a group visit to the Chinese online retailer's headquarters in Beijing.

Li added that JD is considering setting up a high-end site in Thailand similar to the Toplife luxury goods platform that was launched in China in 2017. Such a site would be run separately from JD Central.

Meanwhile, Central JD Commerce will export Thai products to JD's other markets such as Russia and China, where items such as durian and tiger shrimp are gaining popularity, according to Li.

The JV has signed a leasing agreement with WHA Corp. PLC for a 6,848-square-meter warehouse in Bangkok to support its operations, the report said.
