Santos finds high oil production in test of Caley reservoir offshore Australia

Initial tests indicate the Caley reservoir offshore Western Australia can produce around 11,100 barrels of oil per day and 21 million standard cubic feet of associated gas per day, operator Santos Ltd. said in an Oct. 8 news release.

The oil rate is among the highest in North West Shelf appraisal well tests, Santos said, and production could be even higher because the clean-up flow test was constrained by surface equipment.

Santos said the test results indicate potential field production flow rates for the Baxter and Caley discoveries at the higher end of its pre-drill expectations and support progress toward ordering front-end engineering design in early 2020.

Both discoveries were made through the Dorado-3 appraisal well in block WA-437-P. Upon completion of operations, Dorado-3 will be plugged and abandoned, ending Santos' 2019 offshore drilling program.

Santos holds an 80% stake in the project, while Carnarvon Petroleum Ltd. owns the other 20%.
