Lawmakers in China's National People's Congress voted almost unanimously to remove presidential term limits, thereby allowing President Xi Jinping to rule for the rest of his life, according to multiple reports.
Out of the 2,964 votes cast on the matter, 2,958 were in favor of the change while only two were opposed. There were also three abstentions and one spoiled ballot paper, the Financial Times reported.
Earlier reports indicated that the Communist Party was considering eliminating the term limits for the president. The move allows President Xi Jinping, who came to power in 2013, to lead China beyond his previously scheduled 2023 departure from power.
