Report: China's BYD, Changan, JAC eyeing Mexican expansion

Chinese automakers Chongqing Changan Automobile Company Ltd., BYD Co. Ltd. and Anhui Jianghuai Automobile Group Corp.Ltd., which operates as JAC, are planning to produce vehicles in Mexico or expand their existing operations in the country starting 2021, Reuters reported Jan. 13, citing Jose Luis Bernal, Mexico's ambassador to China.

Bernal reportedly said at an event in Mexico that the Mexican Embassy in China has seen increased interest from Chinese companies looking to manufacture cars in Mexico over the past year and a half.

JAC, which already operates in Mexico, is considering an expansion, while Changan and BYD are looking to establish their production facilities in Mexico, Bernal reportedly said.

The companies did not immediately respond to requests for comment, Reuters said.
