ABC loses Indianapolis 500 after 54 years

Walt Disney Co.'s ABC (US) lost rights to the Indianapolis 500 after a period of 54 years.

Comcast Corp.'s NBC Sports Inc. signed a multiyear deal with INDYCAR to become the circuit's exclusive media rights holder. NBC (US) will broadcast the Indianapolis 500 for the first time on May 26, 2019, Mark Lazarus, chairman of NBC Broadcasting & Sports, said in a March 21 official post.

Starting in 2019, the new agreement will include broadcast, cable, digital, streaming and direct-to-consumer rights for all INDYCAR races, qualifying, practices and other content.

NBCSN (US) has been INDYCAR's cable partner since 2009.
