NRG Energy Inc. on March 7 announced changes to its board of directors, as the integrated power company continues to evolve its business to a more customer-focused approach.
Walt Young, Evan Silverstein and Barry Smitherman retired from the board, effective immediately. NRG appointed Matthew Carter and Heather Cox as independent directors. The changes reduce the board size to 12 directors.
Smitherman will continue his involvement with NRG as a consultant to the company on a variety of government and regulatory matters, the company said.
The changes come as the company continues on its three-year, three-part transformation plan aimed at reducing costs, optimizing its portfolio and improving its capital structure.
Carter previously served as president, CEO and director of publicly-traded voice telecommunications services provider Inteliquent Inc. Cox most recently served as executive vice president and chief technology and digital officer of United Services Automobile Association.
