Japan Tobacco's domestic sales slide 8.4% in December 2018

Japan Tobacco Inc.'s domestic cigarette sales fell 8.4% in December 2018 to ¥43.7 billion from ¥47.7 billion a year prior.

The result follows monthly drops from January to August 2018 and in October and November 2018.

In December 2018, Japan Tobacco sold 6.8 billion cigarettes, down 15.1% from 8.0 billion sold a year prior.

For full year 2018, the company's total cigarette sales volume in Japan was 82.0 billion, an 11.7% decline from 92.9 billion cigarettes sold in 2017.

Total domestic revenue for 2018 was ¥496.7 billion, down 10.2% year over year from ¥552.9 billion.

Japan Tobacco also reported that it held a 62.1% share of its home market in December 2018 and had 61.8% domestic market share for full year 2018, slightly up from a market share of 61.3% for the previous year.

As of Jan. 17, US$1 was equivalent to ¥109.04.
