Samsung considers building 2nd chip facility in South Korea

Samsung Electronics Co. Ltd. is considering building a second sermiconductor production line in Pyeongtaek City in South Korea due to increasing demand, Yonhap News Agency reported, citing industry sources.

The company is reviewing plans for another production site and is taking market situations into account, according to Reuters, quoting a statement from the company. Samsung's first production facility began operations in July 2017.

The report is in line with Samsung's statement in 2017 that it reportedly intends to invest about 30 trillion South Korean won to expand the capacity of its factory in Pyeongtaek by 2021.

The news also follows the release of Samsung Group heir Lee Jae-yong after the executive's five-year jail sentence was suspended by a South Korean appeals court. Lee is anticipated to resume his responsibilities at Samsung Group, including his role as vice chairman and director of Samsung Electronics.

Meanwhile, the Samsung Group unit and China's National Development and Reform Commission, or NDRC, agreed to collaborate on chip making, artificial intelligence and semiconductor manufacturing, according to China Daily.

The agreement comes months after the NDRC reached out to the South Korean company over the rise in chip prices in the past 18 months. However, the deal is said to have no connection with the increase in storage chip prices.

Samsung has put up a NAND flash chip factory in Xi'an, Shaanxi province in China, and eyes to further expand its capacity in the facility with an investment of about $7 billion in the next three years.

As of Feb. 6, US$1 was equivalent to 1,084.13 South Korean won.
