US REITs see short interest gains in November 1st half

Average short interest among U.S. equity real estate investment trusts climbed 17 basis points to 4.54% of outstanding shares during the first half of November.

Office REIT Corporate Office Properties Trust had the biggest increase in short interest relative to shares outstanding among SNL-covered equity REITs between Oct. 31 and Nov. 15. The percentage of the company's shares held short relative to shares outstanding increased 778 basis points to 10.03% as of Nov. 15.

Regional mall REIT Pennsylvania Real Estate Investment Trust saw the biggest decrease in short interest relative to shares outstanding among SNL-covered equity REITs between Oct. 31 and Nov. 15. The percentage of the company's shares held short relative to shares outstanding fell 222 basis points to 22.56% as of Nov. 15.

Seritage Growth Properties topped the list of most-shorted REITs in the first half of November. The shopping center REIT saw short interest rise 177 basis points to 35.22% of shares outstanding.
