Japan's household spending edged up 1.9% in real terms in January from the previous year, data from the Ministry of Internal Affairs and Communications showed March 9.
Spending on medical care, housing, and fuel, light and water charges advanced, data showed.
Meanwhile, the average monthly income per household in January slipped 3.3% in real terms from the previous year.
The January data reflected revised forms of account books that were introduced to half of the sample households in January, the ministry said.
