Russian food retailer X5 opens lab store in Moscow to test new technologies

X5 Retail Group N.V. opened a laboratory store in Moscow to serve as a testing ground for new retail technologies, the company said in an Oct. 10 news release.

The Russian food retailer's engineers are currently working on in-store trials of electronic shelf labeling, video analytics, smart shelves, and digital information panels, as well as self-scanning and self-checkout scenarios.

"We have created a lab store to search for the best technical solutions in a quick and effective way ... [t]he actual store serves as a platform for checking new technologies' compatibility with the IT landscape of X5 and assessing customer experience," said X5 Retail Group's Chief Information Officer Fabricio Granja.

Once a technology works out in the lab, it will undergo pilot testing in X5's Pyaterochka, Perekrestok and Karusel stores, where their viability for rollout will be studied and tested.

As of June 30, 2018, the company had 13,178 company-operated stores, including 12,314 Pyaterochka proximity stores, 691 Perekrestok supermarkets and 93 Karusel hypermarkets.
