Daimler renames fuel cell, hydrogen systems subsidiary

Daimler AG said Jan. 2 that it renamed its wholly owned subsidiary Nucellsys GmbH to Mercedes-Benz Fuel Cell GmbH, effective this month, to link the unit more closely with the German car company.

The unit develops fuel cell and hydrogen systems for vehicle applications. Daimler acquired full ownership of the company in 2009.

In the same announcement, Daimler hinted at the use of fuel cell technology to electrify the Mercedes-Benz Citaro city bus in the coming years.

The name change comes after the development of the holistic fuel cell system for the new Mercedes-Benz GLC F‑CELL, Daimler said. The fuel cell and plug-in hybrid technology for the Mercedes-Benz GLC was officially launched in November 2018. The all-electric SUV can run on either electricity or pure hydrogen.
