Swedish fast-fashion giant H & M Hennes & Mauritz AB decided to suspend leather purchases from Brazil amid the Amazon wildfires.
V.F. Corp., the maker of Timberland, Vans and North Face products, has also stopped buying Brazilian leather because of the forest fires.
The companies' move comes amid growing public outcry over the Brazilian government's alleged inaction to the environmental crisis.
"Due to the severe fires in the Brazilian part of the Amazon rainforest, and the connections to cattle production, we have decided to place a temporary ban on leather from Brazil," H&M said in a statement.
The company added that the ban will remain in place until it is proven that the sourcing of leather "does not contribute to environmental harm in the Amazon."
The bulk of H&M's leather products originate from Europe and only a very small part is sourced from Brazil, according to the company.
In 2018, Brazil exported $1.44 billion of bovine leather, with most of the products sent to the U.S., China and Italy, based on data from the Center for the Brazilian Tanning Industry.
