Toyota, Seven-Eleven Japan launch project to reduce carbon dioxide emissions

Toyota Motor Corp. said June 6 that it will work with Seven-Eleven Japan Co. Ltd. on a joint project that will introduce technologies to reduce carbon dioxide emissions in 7-Eleven stores in Japan.

The move builds on Toyota and the Seven & i Holdings Co. Ltd.-owned retail chain's entry into a basic agreement last year on reducing carbon dioxide emission in Seven-Eleven Japan's store distribution and operation.

As part of the project, Toyota will roll out its stationary fuel cell generators and rechargeable batteries in 7-Eleven stores, and these will be managed centrally by building energy management systems. This is expected to raise the proportion of renewable energy and electric power derived from hydrogen used, according to the release.

In addition, the automaker will introduce its newly developed small fuel cell truck in Seven-Eleven's distribution process. The truck is equipped with Mirai FC units, which do not emit carbon dioxide or other substances.

The collaboration is in line with Seven & i's target to increase renewable energy use in stores to 20% and reduce carbon dioxide emissions by 27% by 2030, according to the release.

The project will be implemented in stages beginning 2019.
