GM's self-driving unit Cruise doubling headcount to more than 2,000

GM Cruise LLC, the autonomous car company acquired by General Motors Co. in 2016, is looking to hire 1,000 additional employees as the U.S. carmaker plans to roll out a "robotaxi" service by the end of 2019, Reuters reported March 11, citing a spokesman from the unit.

Cruise currently employs more than 1,000 people, according to the report. A spokesman for the self-driving division told Reuters that it will start hiring more people over the next nine months, majority of which will be engineers.

On the Cruise website career page, open positions include engineering roles that specialize in autonomous vehicle hardware and software.

Cruise also plans to triple its office space in San Francisco, Reuters added.

The news comes more than two months after former General Motors President Dan Ammann took over as CEO of Cruise, replacing co-founder Kyle Vogt, who remained to serve as the unit's president and chief technology officer.

It was earlier reported that Cruise could be headed for a potential IPO after General Motors disclosed a compensation plan for Amman that suggests a possible IPO of the unit in the coming years.
