The French government is set to bar "buy one, get one" discounts on fresh produce in a bid to benefit farmers, Reuters reported Jan. 31.
A food and farming bill reportedly presented to the French cabinet on Jan. 31 contains a measure to cap discounts over 34% on fresh food, effectively ending "buy one, get one" offers on them. The regulation will be on a two-year trial period, Reuters reported.
Retailers in the country would be able to "trim their margins on other products and pay producers better," France's Agriculture Minister Stephane Travert reportedly said. Non-food items do not come under the proposed regulation, Travert said.
The new bill also sought to raise by 10% the minimum threshold at which a retailer can sell a product for a profit, Reuters added.
