Illinois, DC launch probes against Juul over underage use, marketing tactics

Attorneys general from Illinois and the District of Columbia launched their own investigations of Juul Labs Inc. over concerns related to underage use of its products as well as its marketing practices that allegedly target youth, The Associated Press reported Aug. 31, citing state officials.

The office of Illinois Attorney General Kwame Raoul is reportedly conducting a broad inquiry on whether the electronic cigarette maker's product design and marketing allegedly aimed at underage teenagers violated state consumer fraud laws and other statutes, the news outlet said.

A spokeswoman for the District of Columbia Attorney General Karl Racine, meanwhile, confirmed to the news wire that an investigation of Juul is ongoing.

Attorneys general from Colorado, Connecticut and Massachusetts have also launched their investigations against the company, the news wire added.

In May, the state of North Carolina filed a lawsuit against Juul for allegedly targeting minors with its products.

Juul recently announced additional measures to curb the use of its vaping products among the youth, including more stringent age verification and increased product traceability, amid growing scrutiny over the vaping industry.

Last month, a U.S. House of Representatives committee launched a probe into the health effects of e-cigarettes.

Juul did not immediately respond to S&P Global Market Intelligence's request for comment.
