Nucor to build US$1.35B steel plate mill in US Midwest

Nucor Corp. plans to build a US$1.35 billion mill in the U.S. Midwest capable of producing 1.2 million tonnes per year of steel plate products and expected to be fully operational in 2022.

The company said Jan. 7 that the new mill will allow it to produce over 97% of the plate products demanded in the U.S. market, including new products, while creating 400 new jobs.

Leon Topalian, Nucor's executive vice president of beam and plate products, said the company plans to select a site for the new mill in early 2019. It operates plate mills in North Carolina, Alabama and Texas.
