Vattenfall AB has secured a long-term power purchase agreement with Facebook Inc. to provide 294 MW of wind-generated power to its data centers in Odense, Norway, and Luleå, Sweden.
The Sweden-headquartered electric utility signed a contract with the social media network to provide wind integration and balancing services for the three new wind projects in the Bjerkreim cluster, located in southwest Norway, according to a May 23 news release. The wind facilities are owned by a German renewable energy asset management firm, LUXCARA GmbH, and are expected to be in commercial operation by the fourth quarter of 2019.
This is Vattenfall's largest balancing services agreement with an external partner in the Nordics, and Facebook's largest renewable energy purchase in Europe.
