US coal rail traffic sees 3.7% gain year over year

Total U.S. coal rail traffic for the week ended Dec. 15 increased 3.7% year over year to 91,218 carloads, according to data from the Association of American Railroads.

Year-to-date coal rail traffic fell 0.6% through the week, while total rail traffic for the week rose 3.9% year over year to 568,941 carloads and intermodal units.

BNSF Railway Co. coal shipment volumes clocked in at 40,859 carloads in the week ended Dec. 15, rising 3.4% from the previous week's 39,526 carloads and growing 10.4% compared to 37,010 carloads in the year-ago week.

Union Pacific Corp.'s coal shipment volumes this week were at 22,221 carloads, down less than 1% from 22,431 carloads the previous week and 6.9% depressed compared to the previous year's weekly volume of 23,857.

Eastern railroad CSX Transportation Inc.'s shipment volumes of coal stood at 18,114 carloads, jumping 9.4% from the previous week's 16,558 carloads and posting an increase of 6.7% compared to 16,978 carloads the same week in the previous year.

Norfolk Southern Corp.'s coal shipment volumes totaled 20,436 carloads for the week, increasing 12.9% from the previous week's 18,100 carloads and up 12.9% compared to 18,132 carloads the same week a year ago.

Kansas City Southern's latest weekly coal shipment volume was 3,327 carloads, rising 44.2% from 2,308 carloads the previous week. The railroad serves 10 U.S. states and Mexico.

Data collected by S&P Global Market Intelligence from railroads indicate both cars originated on their lines during the week and cars received from a connecting railroad during the same week.
