General Motors Co. said May 3 that it is collaborating with U.S.-based design software company Autodesk Inc. to improve its design process and start manufacturing 3D-printed car components, Reuters reported, citing a company announcement.
The company is planning to integrate the technology into its development to meet the goal of adding alternative-fuel vehicles to its product lineup, the report said.
The automaker in collaboration with Autodesk recently made a 3D-printed stainless steel seat bracket that employs both cloud computing and artificial intelligence-based algorithms. The component is 40% lighter and 20% stronger than the conventional technology.
GM expects that 3D printing will cut costs as it will reduce the amount of material used in manufacturing old components.
