U.S. supermarket chain operator Kroger Co. will launch a self-checkout service in nearly 30 of its Ralphs stores in 2018, the company said Feb. 2.
The shopping technology, which the company calls "Scan, Bag, Go", allows shoppers to use a wireless scanner provided by Ralphs or the Scan, Bag, Go smartphone app to scan and bag products for a quicker checkout experience. Payments will be made through a self-checkout area, but Kroger said it is also looking to enable payments in the app soon.
The new service will be offered as an option in addition to traditional checkout lanes.
Additionally, customers will also be able to view and download digital coupons and keep track of their shopping cart through the app.
The Scan, Bag, Go service will pilot at Ralphs' Studio City supermarket on Feb. 21 and at Ralphs' Redondo Beach store on March 7, both in California.
