Netflix sets 'Breaking Bad' film premiere; Disney+ unveils Obi-Wan Kenobi series

The Program Guide's global edition highlights recent programming announcements from various networks and online video platforms around the world.

On TV

* BBC Studios Ltd. and global content provider Anton have commissioned their first premium short-form scripted series, "Cheaters." The 18-episode show is a comedy drama that takes a look at morality and monogamy, and everything in between. The series goes into production in February 2020.

* Steve Harvey will launch and host African versions of the game show "Family Feud" in 2020. In a deal with format owner FremantleMedia Group Ltd., Steve Harvey Global obtained the rights to create South African and Ghanaian versions of the franchise. These versions will be produced by Rapid Blue, Fremantle's local production partner in the region.

* In other Fremantle news, the company announced a new Asian horror series following a partnership with Indonesian production company Wahana Kreator Nusantara. "The Sacred Riana: Bedtime Stories" is an English-language Asian horror anthology series inspired by local folklore and urban myths, and stars Indonesian magician and illusionist The Sacred Riana.

* HBO (US) will air a four-part limited series called "Catherine the Great," on Oct. 21. Starring Helen Mirren and Jason Clarke, the drama is set against the backdrop of the court of Russian empress Catherine the Great. HBO produced the show in association with Sky Ltd. This limited series will also be available on HBO NOW, HBO GO, HBO On Demand and partners' streaming platforms.

* In other HBO news, the premium cable network renewed "A Black Lady Sketch Show" for a second season. The comedy series presents sketches performed by a core cast of black women, including creator Robin Thede, Ashley Nicole Black, Gabrielle Dennis and Quinta Brunson.

* VH1 (US) renewed "RuPaul's Drag Race" for a 12th season and "RuPaul's Drag Race All Stars" for a fifth season.

* Netflix Inc. placed an order for a new Swedish original series titled "Love & Anarchy." The eight-part romantic dramedy follows Sofie, a career-driven consultant and married mother of two, who meets young IT tech Max while on an assignment to modernize an old publishing house.

* PCCW Media Ltd.'s video streaming service Viu and HBO Asia have renewed their regional version of Scandinavian crime drama "The Bridge" for a second season. The 10-episode sophomore season will simulcast on Viu and HBO Asia in early 2020.

* Viu partnered with Warner Bros. International Television Production Ltd. to remake the "Pretty Little Liars" series in Asia. Localized in Bahasa, the adaptation will follow a group of four estranged girls who reunite when they begin receiving messages from a mysterious figure who threatens to expose their darkest secrets. The show is expected to begin airing later this year and will be available in all 17 of Viu's worldwide markets simultaneously.

* StarzPlay, the subscription platform of Lions Gate Entertainment Corp.'s Starz, will air the third season of crime thriller "Mr. Mercedes" in the U.K., Germany, France, Italy and Latin America on Sept. 19, World Screen reported.

* Netflix has set an Oct. 11 global launch for "El Camino: A Breaking Bad Movie." The film centers on the character of Jesse Pinkman, played by Aaron Paul. In the wake of his escape from captivity shown at the end of the "Breaking Bad" series, Pinkman must come to terms with his past in order to forge some kind of future, according to Deadline.

* In more Netflix news, the company unveiled the premiere dates for its three Chinese-language original series, Variety reported. The streaming giant will stream crime thriller "Nowhere Man" on Oct. 31, action comedy "Triad Princess" will start streaming Dec. 6, while period thriller "The Ghost Bride" will start streaming in January 2020.

* Disney+ unveiled several new projects coming to the Walt Disney Co.-owned streaming service at the D23 Expo. The new projects include the untitled Obi-Wan Kenobi series starring Ewan McGregor and an all-new "Lizzie McGuire" series with Hilary Duff reprising her role in the Terri Minsky-produced show. Marvel Studios LLC is also developing three new live action shows: "Ms. Marvel," "Moon Knight" and "She-Hulk."

* Warner Media LLC's upcoming streaming service HBO Max picked up an original comedy with the working title of "Let Them All Talk," according to The Hollywood Reporter. The film, directed by Steven Soderbergh, stars Meryl Streep and Gemma Chan.

* Netflix announced its second Danish original series, "The Chestnut Man," which is based on a novel by Søren Sveistrup. The thriller drama will debut exclusively on the streaming service worldwide.
