Germany's Minister for Foreign Affairs Heiko Maas said the European Union will likely impose tariffs in retaliation to the U.S. tariffs announcement on a range of European goods, Reuters reported, citing Maas' remarks to German newspaper group Funke.
Maas said Germany would seek the World Trade Organization's approval for imposing "punitive tariffs" on the U.S., Reuters added.
The WTO ruled Oct. 2 that the U.S. can impose tariffs approximately $7.50 billion worth of imports from the European Union as retaliation for subsidies provided by the bloc to Netherlands-based Airbus SE.
The U.S. announced a 10% tariff on aircraft and 25% tariff on agricultural and industrial products from the EU, which are set to take effect Oct. 18.
Separately, U.S. Secretary of State Mike Pompeo said it will hold talks with the EU before implementing the tariffs, Reuters reported, citing his video interview on daily La Stampa website.
