Atlas Carbon gets $15M loan to turn Wyo. coal into activated carbon

A company that turns Powder River Basin coal into activated carbon received a $15 million loan from the Wyoming Economic Development Large Project program to expand its operations.

Atlas Carbon plans to double its annual production to 32 million pounds and hire more employees at its Gillette, Wyo., facility, according to the Wyoming Tribune Eagle.

Jim Ford, Atlas Carbon's vice president and COO, said the company is taking coal that would have been sold for $12 a ton to a power plant "and amplifying that value, 50- to 80-fold."

Activated carbon, also known as activated charcoal, is a highly porous substance that attracts and holds organic chemicals. It has a wide range of industrial and household uses, including water and air filtration, groundwater remediation and medical treatment of drug overdoses.
