Statoil ASA intends to change its name to Equinor as the Norwegian group positions itself as a "broad energy company," a March 15 statement said.
The new name will be proposed to shareholders at the company's annual general meeting on May 15.
"The name Equinor reflects ongoing changes and supports the always safe, high value and low carbon strategy we outlined last year," said Statoil chair of the board Jon Erik Reinhardsen.
The Norwegian government, a major shareholder in Statoil, supports the name change, according to the company.
