UN Security Council expands North Korea sanctions

The United Nations Security Council expanded the existing sanctions on North Korea to include 14 individuals and four entities following a June 2 unanimous vote.

The 15-member council strongly condemned the country's nuclear weapons and ballistic missile development program, under which it has conducted nine missile tests so far this year, including the latest oneMay 29, defying threats of further sanctions being considered by the U.S., China, South Korea and Japan.

"Today's resolution contains one annex with the list of the 14 individuals who are now subject to travel ban and asset freeze and a second annex with the list of the four entities subject to asset freeze," the U.N. said in a June 2 news release.

The U.S. earlier sought cooperation with China, South Korea and Japan in imposing a new set of sanctions against North Korea after Pyongyang successfully tested a "medium long-range" ballistic missile May 14.
