Huawei to offer 5G chips, smartphones in 2019

Huawei Technologies Co. Ltd. will release 5G-capable chips and 5G smartphones in 2019, Yicai Global reported, citing rotating CEO Xu Zhijun, who spoke at the Fourth World Internet Conference in Wuzhen, China.

The Chinese communications equipment conglomerate's pre-commercial 5G system won an award for scientific and technological achievement at the conference in Zhejiang province.

According to Xu, 5G would allow users to download 6GB high-definition films in less than two seconds.

The executive said 5G would also provide a solid foundation for "Industry 4.0," or the fourth industrial revolution, and offer industrial-grade reliability.

Industry 4.0 focuses on "the end-to-end digitization of all physical assets and integration into digital ecosystems with value chain partners," according to PricewaterhouseCoopers.

Huawei recently partnered with South Korean telco LG Uplus Corp. on the Seoul Tech City project to connect the South Korean city on 5G networks.

The Chinese company also worked with Vodafone Group Plc unit Vodafone Italia on pre-standard 5G trials in Milan, Italy, in November.
