UK retail sales rise 1.6% in November, boosted by Black Friday

Black Friday online promotions, particularly for electrical goods, helped fuel a 1.6% year-over-year rise in U.K. retail sales volume in November, according to data released Dec. 14 by the Office for National Statistics.

The performance marked a sharp rebound from October, which showed a 0.3% year-over-year decline.

November sales of electrical appliances were up 8.6% month over month, the largest contributor to growth for the month. The amount of money spent on appliances was up 7% month over month, an indication that consumers were buying at lower prices.

Total spend in November was ahead 4.7% compared to a year prior.

"Household goods stores had a good November, with a number of businesses saying that Black Friday promotions boosted sales," ONS senior statistician Rhian Murphy said in a statement.

Online sales in November jumped 10.4% year over year and accounted for 17% of all retail spending, excluding automotive fuel.

Volume at predominantly nonfood stores increased 1% year over year, boosted by a 2.3% increase in sales of textiles, clothing and footwear. Shoppers delayed purchases of winter clothing in October, which was unseasonably warm.

One notable weak spot was sales at department stores, which shrank 0.9% year over year in volume terms.

Sales at predominantly food stores edged down 0.1% year over year.
