Alabama confirms 1st death linked to vaping

The Alabama Department of Public Health on Oct. 2 confirmed an adult man's death as the first in the state linked to a vaping-associated injury.

As of Oct. 1, Alabama had 19 reports of vaping-related illnesses, including the death, health officials confirmed.

Of these 19 reports, Alabama health officials identified three as probable cases, nine are still being investigated and six were determined to be not related to vaping, according to Sondra Reese, a chronic disease epidemiologist with the Alabama Department of Public Health.

As of Sept. 24, the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention reported 805 lung injury cases from the use of e-cigarette or vaping products and confirmed at least 12 deaths, not including the latest death in Alabama or another fatality reported Oct. 1 in Virginia.

The CDC, U.S. Food and Drug Administration and state health officials are investigating the outbreak and have not tied the illnesses to a specific product or substance. Health officials have asked people to refrain from vaping, especially with products that contain THC.

In the meantime, New York, Michigan and Massachusetts have cracked down on vaping products as part of a broader push to regulate the industry.
