Samsung Research, Samsung Electronics Co. Ltd.'s research and development hub, said May 22 that it will open artificial intelligence hubs in the U.K., Canada and Russia on May 22, 24 and 29, respectively.
The U.K. research hub, in Cambridge, will be headed by Andrew Blake, former director of Microsoft Corp.'s Cambridge laboratory; the Canadian AI center, in Toronto, will be led by Samsung Research America Senior Vice President Larry Heck; and Victor Lempitsky will lead research on AI algorithms at the Russian center in Moscow.
The move is part of the Samsung Group unit's goal to have about 1,000 AI researchers by 2020.
It established AI centers in Seoul in November 2017 and in Silicon Valley in January.
Samsung's other AI-related initiatives in recent years include the launch of AI-powered virtual assistant Bixby on Galaxy S8 smartphones and the acquisition of South Korean AI startup Fluenty.
