Smart thermostats gain traction in US, point to modest electricity savings

New Arizona Public Service programs seek to shift energy use to solar peak

Arizona Public Service Co. has three new programs that will allow customers to take advantage of solar energy at midday when the sun is at its peak and power costs less.

Cool Rewards allows Arizona Public Service residential customers to use smart thermostats to shift energy use to off-peak hours. Participating customers will receive a $25 bill credit on enrollment and a $25 bill credit yearly for the duration of their participation.

Arizona Public Service will launch Storage Rewards and Reserve Rewards later this year. Storage Rewards offers battery storage for participating residential customers, who will receive a one-time award of $500 once the battery is activated.

Reserve Rewards has residential customers use electric water heaters to heat their home's water when excess solar power is available at midday. Arizona Public Service will rebate customers of the full installed price of the equipment.

Arizona Public Service is a subsidiary of Pinnacle West Capital Corp.
